Pride
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Is it okay to feel proud of things I have (money/beauty…)?
I know intellectually that it’s from God, but I don’t really feel that way in my heart.
Answer
There’s nothing here to be proud of.
Yes, you can feel pride, and in all likelihood you have something to feel proud about. Beauty requires maintenance and care. If you eat like a mammoth and live like a mole, you’ll look accordingly, and God won’t help. Likewise, unless you come from a family of millionaires where the other family members will gladly cover your debts, money too can be wasted on nonsense, and it takes self-control to preserve it—and certainly to make more of it.
If a warning is needed about something connected to pride, then it’s a warning against excessive pride. Don’t get carried away with yourself. Between being completely full of yourself and total self-effacement before the world, there’s a very wide range where you can find your place, and it’s okay to be there.
