A Question About a Hermeneutic Rule by Which the Torah Is Interpreted

Question

With God’s help

Hello, honorable Rabbi!

I was interested in understanding the rule, “A restriction after a restriction only comes to include more.”

Is there an expanded discussion of this in the “Midah Tovah” pamphlet?

In which issue, please?

And if the Rabbi wrote about it, I would be happy if the Rabbi could please send it to me.
Best regards,

Answer

Look in “Midah Tovah” on the verse, “And the pit was empty; there was no water in it.” There I also referred to an article by Shmuel Shepercher on this rule.

What do you mean?

How do you find it in “Midah Tovah”??

I don’t know exactly where to look…

I only have a link to all the pamphlets that came out, from 1 to 102 as far as I recall..

You can also look there under the weekly Torah portion with “the pit was empty.” I’m not near a computer right now.

I still didn’t understand exactly where to look..

I’m not familiar with the site or with what you’re telling me to look up by Torah portion… where should I search?

You have all the files. Check in which Torah portion the verse “And the pit was empty” appears, and look for the article on that portion (at least one of the two).

Hello and blessings, Michael!

I wanted to understand, please, the rule “if it is not relevant here, apply it to another matter”…

At first glance, what connection is there between topic A, which contains the superfluous expression, and topic B, which seemingly is far removed from the first topic in its content..

I’d appreciate your help!
Maybe there’s an expanded discussion in the “Midah Tovah” pamphlets?

Michi (2025-09-15)

I no longer remember whether I discussed this there. I don’t have much to say, other than that this is one of the Torah’s interpretive rules. That is, there is an extra expression, and it is supposed to teach about another place. The other place is not far removed in content, but it is different. For example, the derivation that the heave-offering should be given generously is applied to the tithe-offering, because the main heave-offering has no fixed measure, so that derivation is not relevant to it.
