Q&A: The Big Bang and Creationism
The Big Bang and Creationism
Question
Does the Rabbi think that the Big Bang theory strengthens the belief that the world is not eternal and therefore has a Creator (since people are looking for a beginning, and the question then arises: what caused this explosion)? Or philosophically, has the possibility of saying that the world is eternal not really changed—people once spoke about an eternal world in a static form, and now in a dynamic form?
Answer
The question of what was before the Big Bang is not agreed upon. So for now, it does provide some support for the claim that the world was created, but as you wrote, it is not clear what was before the singular point (if there even was a “before,” since time itself was apparently also created then).
