Q&A: Vegan Kashrut
Vegan Kashrut
Question
Hello Rabbi, to what extent can one rely on a person who owns a small business, where Tzohar and the Chief Rabbinate can’t give him a certificate because of its size, and he claims that everything is kosher, including the kitchen? Of course, all the foods in the business are completely vegan.
Answer
Is there supervision by the Ministry of Health regarding its being vegan? If so, then there is room to rely on that it is vegan, but you still need to check tithes and priestly dues, orlah, worms, wine used for idolatrous libation, and ordinary non-Jewish wine, etc. It’s hard to rely on his own testimony, both because sometimes he doesn’t know and because he has a vested interest. When there is supervision, one can rely on what he says about the situation at a time when no supervisor is present, because it is something that is liable to be discovered, and he is afraid for his livelihood.

The tuna is coming out of the suitcases.
A new halakhic ruling states: those who keep kosher are allowed to eat at vegan restaurants abroad • The qualification: one must make sure the food was not cooked with vinegar or wine • Even so, there are those who oppose the leniency:
