Talmud Survey Study
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Do you see value in studying Talmud in a survey-style, broad-coverage way?
Thank you,
Natan
Answer
There is no sharp line between broad-coverage study and in-depth analysis. In principle, it is clear that study means analysis, since a person should understand as much as he can of what he is learning. But broad-coverage study is a tool, and for someone for whom it is helpful, there is nothing wrong with it. I personally have almost never studied that way.
The Netziv said that learning Torah without in-depth analysis is like marrying a woman and not consummating the marriage.
