Torah Study

Question

Hello Rabbi,
Is there, in the Rabbi’s view, value in studying the Daf Yomi? Seemingly, the Talmud is a book written so that we can analyze it and understand every point in depth.
By the same token, is there value in completing the entire Talmud without deep understanding?

Answer

There is definitely value in it. Breadth helps with understanding depth. The question is also how one studies. I have more than once argued to students that the difference between in-depth study and broad coverage is not essential. It is like the difference between an aggressive patrol and a regular patrol in the army. A regular patrol goes along the route and checks that everything is fine. If everything looks fine, it moves on. An aggressive patrol fires into every bush in order to actively bring problems to the surface. Broad-coverage study is not necessarily more superficial. It deals with problems that arise, but it does not forcibly uncover problems that are not visible at first glance. In broad study, one usually opens fewer books, but that is not an essential criterion. You can study Talmud with Rashi in-depth, and Talmud with all the commentators as broad coverage. By the way, in my opinion both have some value; it all depends on the person.

A wonderful analogy.
Does the Rabbi think that the pace, a page a day, is possible for the average person without cutting corners?

A page a day is definitely not easy. It depends on your skill level and how much time you devote to it. Of course, it also depends on which page and which passage you’re dealing with. If you’re flexible with your time and, when necessary, can devote more time, then it is certainly possible. There are pages that you will not be able to study properly in less than three or four hours, and sometimes even more.
But even if on those difficult pages you cut a few corners, overall that kind of study can definitely be beneficial. Keeping the Daf Yomi framework, which helps you keep moving forward and not wander around or get discouraged, is definitely worth it.
