Q&A: A ‘Recent Comments’ List Longer Than 5
A 'Recent Comments' List Longer Than 5
Question
A request only. Right now the site shows a list of the five most recent comments. As someone browsing the site, it would be convenient for me—and all the more so for those who also participate in some discussion—if there were also a link to a longer list of recent comments. Otherwise there is no practical way to follow a discussion that interests me (whether in the responsa section or in comments on columns).
While I’m at it, I’ll dare to be a bit brazen, like Jethro in his time: the site is gaining momentum, and the comments on the columns, and sometimes also on the responsa, function as a kind of miniature forum (and it seems like the upper father of a future forum). Talkbacks on articles are mainly direct responses to the column without any ongoing discussion, and usually people fire them off and forget them, and hardly ever come back again. In a forum, by contrast, people return; they have a fixed username that lets them scan their recent comments, different ways to see whether anything new has appeared on a topic that interests them, etc. The current format here for the columns is a talkback format, and perhaps a different format (like a forum) would be preferable.
Obviously, it is not for a poor man supported by charity (= me) to be exacting about the degree of effort invested in the burger that was donated to him (a vegan mushroom-and-lentil patty, of course), and certainly not to complain that the signs on the way to the soup kitchen are not more convenient. And indeed I am neither being exacting nor complaining—just putting my thoughts in writing.

What does it mean to subscribe? It opens a page with the latest comments in a dense, unreadable format. What the requester meant was what exists on other sites: a tab that opens a page with a long list of the latest comments [for example https://rationalbelief.org.il/]
I’ve now added it below the list of latest comments
Wow, Oren, you’re amazing!!! Thank you so much! ?
Thank you very much, Oren! 🙂
And this is what Isaiah meant when he said, “He plants an oren and the rain makes it grow”—that Oren makes the rain grow on the site (and the Rabbi brings back the wind).
