Q&A: An Oath in Writing on a Computer
An Oath in Writing on a Computer
Question
Would the medieval authorities (Rishonim) who hold that a written oath has legal force say the same about typing on a computer, even though for Torah-level purposes it is not considered writing with respect to the prohibition of labor on the Sabbath?
Answer
By logic, I would say yes, because on the Sabbath the discussion is about what was created—whether it qualifies as writing—whereas with oaths the discussion is about the resolve of mind expressed through speech or writing. If in their time there had been writing on a computer, I assume they would have treated typing on a computer like ordinary writing. All the more so since a written oath is itself an innovation of medieval and later authorities, without a source. It rests only on logic. So that same logic applies here too.
