Q&A: Halakhic Obligation Even Without the Revelation at Mount Sinai?
Halakhic Obligation Even Without the Revelation at Mount Sinai?
Question
I seem to remember that you have always strongly opposed the idea of halakhic obligation without any command at all, including when you already said that the trilogy had been written.
Unfortunately, the trilogy isn’t available online (once I miraculously got by email a book about a black cat, since I don’t intend to buy it, and this time for some reason that didn’t happen..), so all I have left for now is to read articles in Makor Rishon.
So yes, our sages taught us well that journalists’ powers of comprehension are not among the highest, and it’s possible he simply didn’t understand what you said, but there it was written that you say that even without the revelation at Mount Sinai, Jewish law is binding because of ancestral tradition. Is that really so?
Answer
No. That’s a mistake. I sent several corrections to the editors and hope they will be published. You can also see them here on the site, next to the interview.
