A clip from the program "You Came Out a Tzaddik," in which you see a garage owner who, according to the program, stole about 5,000 shekels.
The issue is that the garage owner is an older man, and basically this kind of "exposure" could — I don't know whether to write "ruin his life" — and it's not "shaming" because it's not baseless, but still… In terms of livelihood, it could maybe shut down his business completely; in terms of his "good name," that too; in terms of family and friends, it could also destroy a lot. For example, I think that if it were publicized about a friend of mine that he steals like this, I don't know if I would keep being friends with him. So in a very, very high percentage of likelihood it harms different areas of his life, harm that could take years, if not many years, to repair, and even that isn't certain. In other words, maybe this is harm for life.
I think that if someone was harmed by about 5,000 shekels and filed a complaint with the police, then maybe theoretically he would go to prison (though that's hard to believe), but there would be a trial, he would get the money back, maybe some compensation, and that would more or less be it (and there wouldn't be all this enormous publicity).
And here it comes with the publicity and everything that such publicity does.
So does publicizing it in order to prevent more people from being harmed financially — I don't know if there are other ways one could be harmed in this case — justify the enormous and perhaps total and irreversible destruction of his business and other areas of his life?
