Discussion on Answer
There are different levels of morality. Clearly, someone who manages not to use animals for his needs is acting in a fine and moral way. But this is a virtue that I do not think is currently required of everyone. Torturing them is of course something else.
What troubles me is the thought that an animal is killed so that it will taste good in my mouth. I didn’t know about the death industry; that adds another consideration.
How will I know whether I am at the level of refraining from meat, or whether I am just a sentimental person and can ignore the feeling that comes over me about this?
If you can keep to it and be consistent—more power to you. I don’t think you need to trouble yourself with questions like whether this is your true level.
All right, thanks for this moral reinforcement.
I want to ask further: is it moral to kill an animal in order to satisfy my needs and those of my family, even if the animals do not suffer? I am disturbed by the very fact that I am ending a life in order to satisfy a personal appetite.
I ask myself whether this is just a “good” feeling (a “good inclination”), a need to do good, and it can be ignored, or whether this is a moral question and I should choose my action accordingly.
What is the method for finding an answer to this question?
I have no idea how to think about it.
