Q&A: Building One’s Character
Building One’s Character
Question
Hello and blessings.
I am a yeshiva student, and I’ve noticed that, broadly speaking, when the rabbis talk about the previous Rosh Yeshiva of blessed memory, they usually speak about his greatness as a person and the unique personality he had, and things of that sort, and less about his being a first-rate Talmudic scholar (even though he was one of the giants in that area). And this is a phenomenon that repeats itself throughout the religious world in relation to Torah scholars and roshei yeshiva. And it makes me think: how do I actually work on this area? How can I grow as a person? Unlike learning, where there is some relatively clear path that a person has to go through in order to grow, this whole area of building one’s character is a bit unclear to me. I’d be happy to hear your opinion on the matter and how one should work on these things (I’d also appreciate practical advice).
Answer
There is literature that deals with these topics. I am not worthy to give general advice in this area. I think the main thing is that it should matter to you, and that you should think about it and give yourself an accounting of where you stand (if possible, with a friend who can reflect your situation back to you). Take on tasks for yourself, and check whether you met them (together with him).
