Q&A: Rain in the Sukkah — a Pitcher Poured in His Face
Rain in the Sukkah — a Pitcher Poured in His Face
Question
One who sits in the sukkah and rain falls on him is as though his Master poured a pitcher in his face.
Is the same true of someone who comes to return a lost item and a large tiger stations itself next to it?
Maybe this applies specifically to rain, which is really perceived as being in the hands of Heaven, like the key of rain. And according to your view today, that there is no active providence, then rain on Sukkot too is nature, and one should not get excited about it or feel that it is a pitcher in the face.
Answer
Indeed, I wouldn’t get excited about that today. In fact, not even in the time of the Sages (how did they know?).
One should distinguish between returning a lost item and dwelling in the sukkah. When a tiger comes and prevents you from returning a lost item, that harms the owner as well, not only you.
