Q&A: Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah
Question
Hello Rabbi, happy holiday! What is the meaning of Rosh Hashanah in the Torah? Passover is redemption and the barley harvest. Shavuot is the wheat harvest and, with a reasonable interpretation, also the giving of the Torah. Sukkot is also fairly clear in its meaning. Yom Kippur is explicitly described as a Day of Atonement, and according to Seder Olam it works out nicely that Moses came down with the second tablets on Yom Kippur. But what is the idea behind Rosh Hashanah? The beginning of the year? There is no hint of that. A Day of Judgment? Is there such a thing according to our approach, given the lack of individual providence? Some Torah commentators wrestled with this question and offered various answers that, to my taste, are not satisfactory. I would be glad if the Rabbi would answer me, even though it is not usually his way to deal with these topics. Wishing you a good year, and that all prayers be accepted.
