Q&A: Traditional Jews
Traditional Jews
Question
Happy holidays of rejoicing,
Many times I see that the Rabbi relates to a traditional Jew as worse than an atheist, who at least does what he thinks is right,
the opposite of the simple intuition of all Jews.
I would like to explain why we Jews feel closer to the traditional Jew, for two reasons: (a) apparently, the reason the traditional Jew keeps only a few commandments is that in his view that is all he is obligated in; the traditional Jew’s understanding of Torah is very meager.
And (b), and this is the main point: a person cannot know whether his fellow is a heretic because that is really his opinion or because of impulse. And even if it is because of impulse, a person’s choice is very limited; in most things his impulse coerces him. Therefore the attitude toward the other person is always as toward someone acting under compulsion, and in any case the traditional Jew is closer to me, the religious Jew, because in practice he keeps more commandments. But I am not entering into judging him himself, because usually a person behaves according to how he was educated. Most people also do not keep what they think is right to do, so in any case the discussion is not on the level of evaluating the person, because it is impossible to evaluate a person without knowing his impulses.
Answer
There is no point in getting into general discussions, because each person has to be judged individually. When I speak about a traditional Jew, I mean a person who knows that there is Jewish law and does not bother to learn it and keep it. He does only the things he feels like doing or is used to doing, and that’s it.
Discussion on Answer
And by the way, people who attack you over brutal things you write may also be mistaken — it seems to me that’s beneath your point of choice.
That’s exactly the point — maybe there is no such person, and even if there is, they are very few. Yet you include an entire public and demean it, while glorifying an atheistic public when there is no proof at all that it is really atheistic.
Most people who do what they’re used to doing truly think that this is all they need to do.
Get to know traditional Jews a bit, and your demands of them will drop a lot.
