I saw that on Atsakh there were discussions about mathematics at a high level (a degree in mathematics/engineering level).
Assuming that at least some of the participants in those discussions were Haredi and had not acquired a formal education,
do you have any idea how they reached that level? Is it possible without a high-school foundation?

That assumption is not necessarily correct. There is no way to know who the participants in the discussions are (I know some of them). But there were some Haredim there who could discuss those subjects at one level or another (one of them is already a PhD and a lecturer in mathematics today, whereas back then he was roughly a graduate of second grade in cheder. He reached phenomenal knowledge through self-study).
