Does a person live for the commandments, or are the commandments so that a person may live?
Question
We find two commands on this matter:
1. "Desecrate one Sabbath for his sake so that he may keep many Sabbaths."
2. "You shall keep My statutes and My laws, which a person shall do and live by them" — and not die by them.
And a very difficult question immediately arises: these two directives seem to contradict one another. In the first, life is an instrument for the commandments, while in the second, the commandments are an instrument for life.
What do you think?
Answer
I explained this very well in Column 421.
