Q&A: Betrothal by Dancing
Betrothal by Dancing
Question
Hello, honorable Rabbi/Dr. I seem to remember from somewhere (I don’t recall exactly—I listen to too many of your lectures and it’s hard to keep track) that you said it’s possible to betroth a woman through dancing. I said this in some conversation with a religious female friend (I’m not religious) who claims to know Jewish law at a reasonable level, and she says that isn’t correct. She mentioned several other possibilities that do allow betrothal, but not dancing, according to her. I hope the Rabbi really did mean that and that it wasn’t said jokingly in a lecture or as a metaphor. I’d be glad if the Rabbi could give me sources for this so I can show her. Thank you very much. More power to you.
Answer
This is stated explicitly in the Talmud. See Kiddushin 63a.
Thank you very much
