Q&A: Learning with Joy
Learning with Joy
Question
The rabbi of Alexander, in his book Yismach Yisrael (at the beginning of the portion of Bechukotai), wrote as follows: “One who studies Torah and understands and appreciates the give-and-take and explanation of the Torah, and takes pleasure in it, this is not called Torah study as service, exertion, and toil; for in this, since he enjoys it and rejoices, ‘he shall neither faint nor grow weary.’” End quote.
This is very troubling. I always tried to become happier and happier in my learning—does that mean that everything I learned does not count as learning with toil??? What do you think?
I know the introduction to Eglei Tal, but perhaps this is not agreed upon among the commentators and halakhic decisors?
Answer
Why is it important whether it is agreed upon or not? The important question is whether it is true or not.
As for the matter itself, I assume that if you enjoy it then you will receive reward for the commandment, but not reward for toil and suffering (“according to the pain is the reward”). But I would still assume that it is preferable to enjoy it.
