Q&A: Basketball
Basketball
Question
Who do you think is the best basketball player playing today?
Answer
I don’t know. Why is my opinion important on that matter?
Discussion on Answer
It reminds me of the text messages I get after a call with the insurance company or the HMO, when they do a service survey and excitedly inform me: "Your opinion matters to us."
As for the matter itself, it’s impossible to answer that question. Each player has different skills in which he stands out, and there’s no way to rank which is more important.
I thought maybe the question could be defined more precisely: adding which player to four given players would most increase the chance of winning. But even that, of course, isn’t precise, because it depends on the abilities of the other four and what they’re missing that he would complement.
In short, it’s an ill-defined question. You can look at the thousands of futile debates about LeBron versus MJ.
As the Rabbi wrote in column 237: "As someone who invests quite a few hours of his nights in the wonderfully sporting activity of watching NBA games and enjoys them immensely (this is art on a marvelous level. Truly uplifting)"—your opinion matters to us.
