Between Positive Commandments and Prohibitions
Question
Hello,
Is there a difference in the command and obligation between a positive commandment and a prohibition?
That is, for example, with the prohibition of “do not stand idly by your neighbor’s blood,” which requires actual action (positive action), can one say that the actions are not really an essential part of the commandment itself (but rather what? a necessary condition?), and that is why it is a prohibition? In other words, it is more an obligation regarding the result—that one not remain passive—while the action itself is not what matters. Can one say something like that?
Answer
See column 202, and also the series that begins with 414.
