Is a Woman Halakhically Permitted to Tie Tzitzit?
Question
Rabbi Michael, hello,
As my son’s bar mitzvah approaches, my husband bought tekhelet strings for himself and for our son. Because of difficulties with fine motor skills, I stepped in to help them and tied the tzitzit strings (of course, according to the halakhic requirements…)
Do they need to undo them and tie them again?
And if not after the fact, would it be permitted again, ideally, from the outset?
Thank you!
Answer
In the Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 14:1, the Mechaber rules that it is permitted from the outset, but the Rema is uncertain and rules that ideally it is preferable not to. After the fact, according to all opinions, it is valid.
