Q&A: Nullification of Leaven
Nullification of Leaven
Question
Hello and blessings! How is it that we do both the sale of leaven and the nullification of leaven at the same time? After all, if the leaven has been sold, it is no longer ours and we cannot nullify it; and if the leaven has been nullified, it is no longer ours and we cannot sell it. In my opinion, it is hard to say that we do both so that, either way, we will not have any leaven in our possession, because the very fact that you perform the second action shows a lack of full intent in the first action, and vice versa, so it should not work at all.
Answer
In principle, the sale of leaven deals only with leaven that one does not nullify, but rather sets aside and wants to use after Passover. The nullification refers only to leaven that is not important and that we no longer want to use, except that we may have missed it during cleaning. After all, the Talmud says that even if you nullify it and then find a fine loaf, there is concern that you did not really nullify that one.
