Q&A: Where Should I Start Learning to Believe in God?
Where Should I Start Learning to Believe in God?
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I listened to your interview on Geekonomy. I’m in a situation where I come from a religious background, but I don’t really believe in anything. I’m not exactly a nonbeliever either, but I’m basically on autopilot.
Where would you recommend starting to learn about it (whether from things you’ve written or from others) if I want to become convinced?
Answer
I’m not familiar with, and don’t know of, things other than my own books (mainly the trilogy). I’m not comfortable sending you to them, and perhaps there is other literature that I’m not familiar with. It also depends on what speaks to you and what kind of way of thinking you’re looking for.
Discussion on Answer
With respect, I personally read the trilogy and found it interesting. At the same time, a lot of friends who wanted to read the book started it and very quickly gave up, because it’s written in a long, exhausting style. Could you maybe put out an abridged version, or send it to someone to rewrite the whole thing in a clear, accessible, easy style?
Thanks.
There you go, you’ve got the assignment. “The one who reads the letter should be the one to carry it out.”
There’s Rabbi Moshe Rat’s book, “Simply to Believe.” I assume that answers the need, no?
I understand. I’ll try the trilogy anyway.
