Q&A: Traditional Conversion
Traditional Conversion
Question
Dear Rabbi, hello,
I read the Rabbi’s column about Rabbi Melamed’s traditional conversion, and I have to say that this Sabbath I studied Yabia Omer, volume 11, responsum 29, section 13. There Rabbi Ovadia explicitly brings a basis for traditional conversion along the lines of what the Rabbi wrote in the column: that the convert accepts upon himself that this is forbidden and that is permitted, even though he personally does not have the strength to keep the commandments. He does not reject the idea, but toward the end he writes, and I quote: “This still requires further consideration,” end quote. Interesting that Rabbi Y. Yosef did not remember his father’s responsum (that part of the responsum is on page 328, so maybe that’s why he forgot?).
Answer
I sent that as a talkback to that column.
