Q&A: Free Choice
Free Choice
Question
Hello Rabbi, I’d be glad if you could show me where my mistake is. How is it even possible to argue about this topic? Because if there is no free choice, then even if we prove in some way that there is free choice, we would say that we were forced to reach that conclusion, and it has no connection to reality, but is just some mechanical process operating in our heads that makes it seem to us as though we have choice. And if there is free choice, then there is…
Answer
I’m not sure I understood. Are you claiming that if you assume determinism, then even if arguments are raised in favor of free choice, you’ll say that they are forced on us? Correct. Obviously, if you assume that, then you’ll remain with it as well.
Discussion on Answer
It won’t help if you assume determinism. But if you’re open to discussion, then yes.
So how can it be proved? Because if everything is deterministic, then everything is forced, and no argument made in favor of free choice will help. And if there is free choice, then there is… In short, my question is that no proof will help either side.
