Q&A: Corona Patient
Corona Patient
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I’m not feeling well. Since Thursday I’ve had a bit of a cold and a bit of a sore throat,
so I took a home test, which as is well known isn’t worth much, and it came out positive.
So I assume that I probably am positive. There’s a good chance.
So the question is whether, from a moral and halakhic standpoint, I’m allowed to go to the kollel tomorrow, since all the people there don’t care about corona, and as far as they’re concerned this whole matter is a thing of the past?
In other words, I assume most people won’t test whether they’re sick, and even if they are sick they’ll come to kollel because corona is over…
So am I supposed to stay home, or should I go and just try not to infect anyone?
Answer
First of all, it’s not true that a home test isn’t worth much. It definitely is worthwhile and reliable.
Beyond that, the fact that in your kollel people are being lax doesn’t mean it’s permissible to be careless. One should remember that if someone there gets infected, he will also infect others (outside the kollel) who are not interested in that. This selfish way of thinking really infuriates me.
In my understanding, one should act in accordance with the instructions of the Ministry of Health, and not make do with saying that corona is over. I don’t know what the current instructions are, but you can check online.
