Q&A: God’s Providence and Influence on the World and on Human Beings
God’s Providence and Influence on the World and on Human Beings
Question
I’m reading your column in response to Rabbi Moshe Rat’s comment on the subject.
My question is: after all, you write that you believe in the Torah and believe that God expects us to observe the commandments, and you also do not deny reward and punishment.
In the Torah it is written that God punishes and gives material reward to humanity and to the world in connection with observing His commandments, and there are many verses about this, and the Torah says that it also applies to our time. Likewise, in the Bible there are prayers and requests of Abraham and Moses to God, so why assume that because there are fewer obvious miracles, God has changed His policy?
In light of this, how can one both believe in the Torah and also claim that God does not intervene nowadays in events and in nature?
Also in the Oral Torah and in Psalms, for example: “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,” etc.
