Q&A: Metatron?
Metatron?
Question
‘Behold, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared:
Beware of him and obey his voice; do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your transgression, because My name is within him:
But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes:
For My angel will go before you and bring you…’
Rashi says this is Metatron…
What is this, a call to serve God through an intermediary? What kind of angel is this?
At least not to make him angry?
I really don’t understand.
I’m asking for the most basic, minimal plain meaning.
Answer
What is the question, and what exactly is the problem? The Holy One, blessed be He, sends an angel and tells us to obey his voice. Just as He sends sages and tells us to obey their voice. What service through intermediaries do you see here? Is this a basic and minimal question? This is just hairsplitting, the kind of forced difficulty someone raises with effort.
