Q&A: Training an Artificial Intelligence Model on Talmudic Texts as a Torah Study Aid
Training an Artificial Intelligence Model on Talmudic Texts as a Torah Study Aid
Question
Hello Rabbi,
What do you think about a project to train an artificial intelligence model on Talmudic texts so that it could serve as a Torah study aid for learners of Torah? The model would be a bit like ChatGPT, except that it would be trained on Talmudic and Torah texts, so that it would acquire the Talmudic language and know how to infer one thing from another. That way, anyone could consult this model just as people currently search Torah databases such as the Responsa Project. The consultation would of course be much higher quality and would resemble consulting a Torah scholar who knows the entire Talmud by heart and also knows how to distill the abstract principles behind each case.
Best regards,
Answer
Sounds excellent. I’m sure it’s on the way.
The problem is that such a project would require many resources, and it does not have enough potential paying customers (unlike ChatGPT). That is, funding for such a project would have to come from the public, or from some university, or from philanthropists. Maybe your friend Professor Moshe Koppel could promote something like this at Bar-Ilan?
