Q&A: Debate
Debate
Question
Hi,
Would the Rabbi be willing to do a debate with an atheist about the existence of God, like the debate about morality, to be uploaded to YouTube on the “Rosh BaRosh” YouTube channel? Or is he not interested in debates?
Thanks
Answer
Generally, I don’t like debates. They’re mainly meant to entertain, not to get to the bottom of things.
Discussion on Answer
Maybe yes, because of his great influence.
That’s a shame. Rosh BaRosh does serious debates. And relatively long ones—an hour and a half. If the offer is still relevant, I’d be very happy if the Rabbi would consider it.
This topic is weighty and also very charged, so a debate is not a suitable way to conduct it. If you want to discuss it seriously, you need to define the concept of God, you need to understand היטב what proof is and what belief is, and then get into all the nuances of the different arguments about it (which are themselves also very subtle, and hard to convey in writing or in a lecture, and even more so in a debate). It’s hard for me to see how that can be done in a debate format. If there were organized lectures by each side and only afterward a discussion, that might be possible.
The debate was held this evening (with the representative of the atheist side), and will be uploaded soon to the “Rosh BaRosh” podcast.
Does the Rabbi know how soon “soon” is?
And without spoilers, heaven forbid, how would you say it went for you?
There’s someone named Yaron Yadan who has huge influence online. He makes the Torah into an object of mockery and ridicule. We need a figure like the Rabbi to address his claims and deal with them.

Would you do a debate with Richard Dawkins?
