Q&A: Torah Learners
Torah Learners
Question
After I explained to one of the rabbis I like that I oppose the Basic Law on Torah study, he answered me that the principle is: “If the great rabbis of Israel instructed their representatives to support it, then nothing is more necessary than it; and if they did not instruct them to do so, then nothing is more unnecessary than it.” What do you think?
Answer
It seems you either are not familiar with my views or this is trolling. If someone who is called one of the great rabbis of Israel says something foolish or immoral, that does not change the judgment about those actions. At most, it changes the judgment about those individuals. Apparently they are not as great as you thought.
Discussion on Answer
Not objectionable at all. Who said it is? It’s a question of degree, timing, and form. See Column 34.
Not trolling, I promise.
One more question: the state funds Torah learners. It also funds culture, soccer, and surely many other things that are less worthy than Torah study. At the end of the day, there is Torah study here, and it benefits the world and the Jewish people. Why is that so objectionable?
