Q&A: Frustration with the Debate
Frustration with the Debate
Question
I just watched the debate you held with Aviv from the theist side.
As usual, in my opinion you presented yourself precisely, with sharp intellectual ability and great taste. Even the modest primary goal you took upon yourself—to present only that belief in God is a rational option—was brilliant. I think you definitely won the debate easily.
In any case, that’s not what I wanted to point out. I wanted to vent—I’m not sure you have a fitting answer for the future here—but I felt frustrated throughout the whole episode because Aviv—at least that was my impression—wasn’t really listening to and hearing the arguments you presented. Again and again and again he repeated himself, and didn’t really respond to your answers. You answered one, he pulled out two, three, four, then you started answering in order, and he went back again to one, then again to four, and so on in circles.
I’m not writing this in order to flatter you or boost your ratings and give you a bit of satisfaction (though that matters too). I’m wondering: do you think there’s any explanation for this sad phenomenon? These people present themselves as rational and skeptical. So why is it so hard for you to listen and respond properly? Why is there no real response to the substance of the arguments? What is there to be so afraid of? It’s obvious that the speaker has decided, ‘There is no God.’ And now every argument presented before him is brushed aside with straw and nonsense. It’s strange.
Did you feel that too? I’m venting accumulated frustration here. Again and again, in almost every debate you’ve had (almost—maybe there are some I haven’t seen), the people—some more, some less—fail at this.
So in conclusion, do you share this feeling? And if so, maybe you have an explanation for the phenomenon? Maybe tips for how this kind of thing can be prevented from happening again? And how do you keep getting into debates like this without feeling the same frustration?
That’s it. I’ve vented.
[One final note: in my opinion, despite the frustration, there is still value in it—if only because the listeners will notice it and decide for themselves what is more rational…]
Answer
Hello. Thank you.
You mean this: https://youtu.be/LVTmRwitEUI
It is people’s nature to entrench themselves in their position and defend it. That is true of people from all sides—believers and atheists, capitalists and socialists. Usually it annoys us when the person doing it holds a position opposed to our own. Sometimes philosophical lack of skill is added to that as well. And that too is fine, and happens on all sides.

Me too.
Does the Rabbi expect or plan to write a post בעקבות the debate? Maybe to complete the picture? Reflections on these dialogues?
Best regards
No
Apparently yes – https://mikyab.net/posts/82112
True. But what changed my mind was the insight about empiricism, not a desire to complete the debate (as was the case with Enoch).
I join the above as well
