Selichot
Question
So the month of Selichot has arrived, and I wanted to ask two questions.
1. What does the Rabbi personally think about Selichot, and does he go every day?
2. I think that most people who say the selichot (at least those I know) don’t really understand most of what’s written there, because everything is written in Aramaic or in language that isn’t clear to us. Is there any point to that? To reading and asking forgiveness with a text that we don’t understand at all?
Answer
In my opinion, there isn’t much point to it.
Discussion on Answer
Maybe, for some people. It should have been updated and shortened.
Could you explain why you think there isn’t much point to it?
You explained it well.
In my opinion, the Rabbi is Ashkenazi, so in any case the amount of Selichot he says is limited anyway (he doesn’t need to ask forgiveness for legumes on Passover—actually, I’m not sure). Doesn’t saying Selichot create an atmosphere?
