Q&A: The Lack of Loyalty of Israeli Arabs to the State
The Lack of Loyalty of Israeli Arabs to the State
Question
Have a good week, Rabbi,
On the Sabbath I happened to read an article about an Arab Christian airborne mechanic who says that if they find out in her village that she is in the army, they will kill her and her entire family. Her village is already mixed, with Muslims and Christians. From other sources, such as Dr. Dan Schueftan, I understood that Israeli Arabs educate their children around “role models” of terrorists, and these are the heroes of their society. My question is: how can one deal with this phenomenon in light of your view that one can also relate to the collective “hat” of individuals? Can any sanctions be imposed on Israeli Arabs as a collective? Should they be? Is it possible to throw this collective out?

Answer
What good would sanctions do? If there is a threat from them as a collective, then there is justification for dealing with it. The question is whether it is possible and how.
Why would someone who has no loyalty to his people or his tribe have loyalty to some empty formal thing called a state? If their people are fighting us, there is no chance in the world that they can be loyal to the “state,” which, as stated, is devoid of meaning.
