Q&A: Haredim and the Draft
Haredim and the Draft
Question
I didn’t really manage to understand your view on the main Haredi claim (which admittedly they don’t say publicly, but this is the real reason): that a comprehensive draft of the Haredim would completely dismantle the Haredi DNA, which is based on separatism, and thereby destroy the world of Torah and spirituality in the Land of Israel. My question is: in your opinion, is that claim incorrect, or is it correct but you don’t care because they need to enlist?
Answer
I don’t care, because they need to enlist. Saving life overrides prohibitions, so it also overrides outfits. And also because there is no value in defensive, hysterical Haredism, so there is no reason to preserve it.
Discussion on Answer
The draft of a secular person or a Religious Zionist is also by coercion.
What would probably be most relevant is to give the Haredim two options:
Either grant everyone an exemption at age 17 along with scholarships for secular studies (which would help the economy).
Or create a semi-Haredi enlistment framework, for example routine security service, with yeshivas stationed along the border: half a day on guard duty, half a day defending the borders. (There could also just be a small group at an outpost, since most of the time it’s boring anyway).
If you believe that the world exists only because there are Torah scholars studying Torah (as explained by the Sages), then the Haredim should be exempted from the IDF, because they are the only ones among all types of Jews who study with such seriousness, and in such quantity and quality. As any true sensible person knows.
The Jew,
Tactics and assessments are a matter for politicians. It’s pretty clear to me that coercion won’t work here. Cutting budgets certainly would (and such things have happened before). But in my estimation there’s no political chance of that. It’s a deadlock with no way out.
Maybe the High Court will save us. From Fogelman it was pretty clear that he’s going to stop the money going to the yeshivas of draft-dodgers within a month after the state submits its response.
And one more thing: what do you think should be the correct government strategy, assuming the High Court forces the government to draft them — cutting budgets, forced conscription, draft quotas, some kind of arrangement? And do you think anything will actually happen in the end, or will the Haredim threaten to bring down the government and Bibi will manage to get yet another extension?
