Q&A: Saving a Citizen at the Expense of a Foreign Civilian
Saving a Citizen at the Expense of a Foreign Civilian
Question
I have a question that may not be acceptable, but it needs clarification regarding the special operation to rescue the four hostages. I understand that it is obvious that when our civilians are kidnapped by a terrorist organization, everything must be done to bring them back, including risking human lives. My question is: assuming that a hundred civilians were killed who had no connection whatsoever to Hamas, did not support them, and even hated them, why is it so obvious that the lives of our civilians are more important than theirs? In modern thinking, according to which all human beings were created equal, is there room for considerations of citizenship? Suppose, for example, that the hostages were being held here in the country by Israeli civilians—would things have had to be handled differently?
