Q&A: Did Rabbi Micha Halevi break a commitment?
Did Rabbi Micha Halevi break a commitment?
Question
Of course you know that there was a decision by a committee of rabbis from Religious Zionism that chose Rabbi Meir Kahane to be its candidate for Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi. In that vote, Rabbi Micha Halevi lost. Before that, he signed a commitment that if he lost, he would not run against the candidate the committee chose. But since then there have been rabbis in Religious Zionism (Rabbi Nebenzahl, Rabbi Lior) who challenged the decision and said that the committee is not binding and Rabbi Micha Halevi can run. In contrast, Rabbi Yaakov Ariel said that the committee is binding. What do you think? Did Rabbi Micha Halevi act fairly or not?
Answer
I am not familiar with the details. At first glance it looks disgraceful, which clearly proves that Rabbi Micha Halevi is worthy of being Chief Rabbi.
