Q&A: Rabbi Yirmiyah’s Question
Rabbi Yirmiyah’s Question
Question
In one of the lectures on Platonism, the Rabbi said that many times questions in the Talmud are meant to clarify a principle, and they themselves would never really happen, like wheat raining from the sky and the like. If so, Rabbi Yirmiyah’s question—if one leg of the chick is within fifty cubits and one is outside fifty cubits—sounds like a question that clarifies an important principle, even though the chances of it actually happening are practically zero. So why did they really throw him out? Thank you very much, Rabbi! “Who will give us iron shoes so that we may run before you”!
Answer
The people in the study hall there apparently understood that he was just asking silly stumpers and not trying to clarify anything substantive. Or perhaps his intention was to clarify the issue of fixed measures—whether it is a mathematical matter or a conventional one—and if so, then throwing him out of the study hall was their answer to his question. If you like, I’ll get you some iron shoes. 🙂
