Question

Are midrashim that expand on the stories of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) inventions, or are they descriptions of events that really happened and were passed down through tradition from generation to generation?
For example: Abraham smashing the idols, Nimrod’s fiery furnace, Joseph the Righteous meeting Pharaoh and their competition over who knew more languages, and so on.
