A Simple Question

Question

Hello Rabbi,
I want to ask, in the simplest possible terms, a question that could be wrapped in intelligent-sounding expressions and supposedly sophisticated philosophical and scientific theories.
It’s true that today it’s hard for us to understand the idolatry of the past. How can a rational person worship a statue? Is it possible that the statue can actually do something?
But really, there isn’t such a big difference between that and the thought that our complex world created itself or always existed. After all, that idea is no less childish, just usually wrapped in supposedly scientific theories. To think that the human eyeball, with all its unimaginable complexity, came into being by itself is no less absurd than thinking that the sign “Welcome to Petah Tikva” at the entrance to Petah Tikva came into being by itself. Or than thinking that a statue is capable of eating.
Which leads to the thought that both then and now, people don’t really believe in this, but simply want to be part of a group that believes it, and to enjoy the other advantages that come with belonging to that group.
(For example, in the past idolatry was accompanied by permissiveness, prostitution, etc. And today too, it’s not far off. A lack of commitment, life without fear, life as one big celebration. Seemingly.)
What does the Rabbi think about this?

Answer

I think one should not take pride in ignorance.

I think there is something to what was said, though from a different direction: the common denominator between idol worship and atheism is that neither believes in an absolute (and binding) truth. Either because nature is a collection of different spiritual forces, or because it contains no spiritual force at all.
