Q&A: Searching for a Yeshiva
Searching for a Yeshiva
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I am a 12th-grade student looking for a higher yeshiva or a hesder yeshiva where there is systematic, in-depth, serious study of faith / belief, with an open and analytical approach — as well as Talmud study at a high level.
Does the Rabbi know of any yeshiva frameworks that might be suitable?
Thank you very much in advance.
Answer
I know of some only in a very general way. In my view, faith studies are a waste of time, so allow me not to address that topic. If you want that anyway, ask someone who disagrees with me on this issue. As for Talmud study, in all the main yeshivot I assume the learning is at a good level: Gush Etzion, Yeruham, Ma’ale Adumim, and the like. Of course, higher yeshivot too.
Discussion on Answer
In my view the value is not great. Maybe knowing some of the main ideas in them gives you some general education, but in my opinion, instead of studying Jewish thought, it’s better to think. I’ve elaborated on this in several places, such as in the second book of the trilogy. You can also search the site.
Thank you very much for the answer. Just regarding faith studies, in your view is there no value in studying, within a yeshiva framework, major works of faith such as Guide for the Perplexed, Duties of the Heart, and the like, even at a basic level?
