Q&A: Political Decisions in Halakhic Rulings
Political Decisions in Halakhic Rulings
Question
Hello, how does the Rabbi view the issue of halakhic rulings that touch on political questions? I mean a halakhic issue that is discussed on the basis of ancient sources but is interpreted politically. How is it possible that in the end, most right-wing rabbis will rule in favor of continuing the war and against an agreement, while conversely most left-wing and Haredi rabbis will rule the opposite? Thank you.
Answer
A halakhic ruling is often influenced by the rabbi’s worldview. There is nothing at all wrong with that. But it definitely means that there is no obligation whatsoever to take it into account, since you can formulate your own worldview yourself. There is room to go to a rabbi and ask, based on your own worldview, what Jewish law says.
Beyond that, many rabbis have a tendency to present opinions as halakhic rulings. Questions like these are in many cases not halakhic questions at all.
