Election bribery

שו"תElection bribery
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Hello Rabbi,
Do you think there's anything wrong with offering someone money to vote for List X? I know it's forbidden by law, but I'm not really sure why. After all, that's what all elected officials do. They promise their voters all sorts of things in exchange for them voting for them. Sometimes it's just financial benefits, like the promise to increase pensions for the elderly when the Pensioners' Party ran at the time. So why is it forbidden when they actually give money?
Best regards,

I don't see anything morally wrong with such a step. But it is certainly right that the state should prevent it, because it gives direct political power to those with money.
