Are Ethiopians Jews?
Are they obligated to the rulings of the Talmud even though they did not receive it, did not know it, and did not hear from it?

This has come up here before in the Responsa. As I wrote, I have not gone into this issue and I do not know. Regarding their commitment to the rulings of the Talmud, in principle there is reason to doubt it (I devoted a column to this, I think), but the explanation is that because of their minority, when they join the rest of the Jewish people, they must accept the commitment to the Talmud as part of entering the community.
