And what does the Rabbi say about the claim that those who put it in their pants are like someone hiding a medal from the king and supposedly ashamed of being a servant of God?
And is there any point in spending the amount?

Yes, because that is the custom (at least among Ashkenazim). I think there is value in spending money to indicate your commitment to the mitzvot. But of course, there is no problem with someone who doesn't spend money. If he knows for himself that he doesn't spend money because of shame, then maybe he has a problem and it is better for him to spend money.
