Irrelevance of religion in the Corona crisis

שו"תIrrelevance of religion in the Corona crisis
שאל לפני 6 שנים

In recent days, I have felt a strong sense that the Corona crisis is leaving the religious world – simply irrelevant .
A plague as a heavenly message:
In any other crisis or challenge, it is easy to connect it and interpret it religiously. If a national disaster happens to the Jewish people, it is because of our sins (for example – the Holocaust due to assimilation), if miracles happen (the Gulf War, the Six-Day War), it is because we are children of the place.
If disasters happen among the Gentiles – we interpret this so that we can take a lesson ("If you fear me, you will take a lesson – Zephaniah 3:7). We also know how to explain that it is measure for measure: if Iran suffers – it is punishment for the nuclear program. If it is Italy and Spain – because of Christianity and the Inquisition, Germany – because of the Holocaust.
The current pandemic (and its economic, social, and psychological consequences) attacks without distinction of color, race, or gender (including countries for which we have no historical or cultural emotion or memory – such as China). It is a problem that endangers a Shinto believer from Japan, a Shiite Muslim from Iran, and a Shtreimel physician from Mea Shearim – equally. What is happening now shows that there is no correlation between what you wear on your head, or what you believe in, and your chance of dying from the disease. (Despite everything I have written, information is published in the name of rabbis about why there is coronavirus, for example – https://bshch.blogspot.com/2020/03/blog-post_4334.html , but I fail to understand why the Chinese are connected to this).
Prayers to stop the epidemic:
Another thing – usually when there are disasters, the religious world unites, and attributes success or failure to prayers. If we succeed, it is thanks to prayers, if not, it is because we did not pray enough, because there is 'wrath,' and the like.
In our situation, the authorities are asking the religious not to gather and pray in synagogues, because it is simply harmful. "Do yourself a favor, wait with your prayers for better opportunities. In the meantime – just don't disturb," in contrast to the usual leniency towards prayers – "if it doesn't help, it won't hurt"…
This happens not only in Israel, but also in the world, for example – https://www.bhol.co.il/news/1090298
The public mood (which does not belong to medical or religious authorities) also conveys that the religious public is only causing harm to the national war, when it violates government orders in order to hold religious ceremonies, or simply because of a lack of commitment to the law and/or science.
It seems to me that the religious world is completely out of the game, and has no clear statement or help that it can contribute.
What do you think?

My opinion has been written here many times and also in my trilogy. There is no religious aspect to the matter. And the fact that people have all sorts of unfounded beliefs is their problem. The relevance of religious belief is to the matter of the obligation to worship God according to Halacha, not in relation to this or that worldview. These are usually invented out of thin air.
