On the legitimacy of refusal

שו"תOn the legitimacy of refusal
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Hello Rabbi,
I remember that you believe that it is legitimate to resort to the tool of refusal as part of the political game, and that this is how the public expresses a position. On the other hand, I have heard many experts claim that refusal is a dangerous tool that should be reserved for at most the most serious cases of clearly illegal orders, and certainly not as part of the political game. I wanted to ask why, in your opinion, the danger of refusal does not outweigh its benefits. And especially with regard to the refusal of pilots today, why, in your opinion, this is legitimate refusal and not an excessive step.

I wrote that I do not have a clear position regarding the pilots' refusal to accept the reform. In any case, it is clear that I also agree that it is a tool for extreme situations only. The question of what constitutes an extreme situation depends on the assessment of each refuser. If a person thinks that there is a danger of dictatorship and the loss of freedom, this is a situation that justifies refusal and even more. If I disagree with his assessment, it does not matter, since he makes decisions according to his own assumptions and beliefs.
