Tattoo in Halacha

Hello Rabbi
I'm currently in the middle of reading the third book in your trilogy of thoughts on the subject of Halacha, and I just finished the part on autonomous Halacha rulings and "Bar Hi."
I've wanted to get a tattoo for many years, it's something very significant to me, and so far I haven't done it because I'm religious.
Even before I read this part, I researched the subject and saw that the Gemara does not have an unequivocal halachic ruling on the prohibition, and even in our day and age when it is accepted that tattoos are forbidden, it is still permissible to do permanent makeup, so I considered doing a tattoo with permanent makeup.
I would appreciate your help on this subject, because I feel that I am not, as you say, "very knowledgeable" enough on the subject. On the one hand, yes, in the Gemara there are sages who have ruled that it is permissible to get a tattoo as long as it is not idolatry/name of God and so on. On the other hand, it is accepted today that it is forbidden and I am concerned that I am excluding myself from the rule in a somewhat extreme way (for context, I do wear jewelry such as earrings/rings/necklaces, dyed hair and also nail polish on my fingers from time to time, but I do feel that getting a tattoo is a serious step and perhaps too far).
