Why is wine forbidden today when there is no temple?

שו"תWhy is wine forbidden today when there is no temple?
שאל לפני 3 שנים

In honor of Rabbi Michael Avraham.

As is well known, fortified wine is forbidden to drink. However, reality has changed; there is no longer a temple, and nowadays in developed Western countries there is no concern that the wine is being produced for the purposes of idolatry. Why then is fortified wine forbidden to drink?

In addition, it should be said that there is no fear that because of our proximity to the Gentiles, alcohol will unite us. After all, the same store that sells wine also sells beer. So Gentile wine is forbidden but Gentile beer is permitted? Where is the logic?

Thank you very much for all your efforts to answer the questions.

Today, this is a mere decree of the rabbis, not a decree of the rabbis. According to the principle of the law, a rabbinic ruling is not invalid even if its content is invalid until the Sanhedrin annuls it.
